"She flies with her own wings."

Oregon has the coolest state motto, and it has an interesting history. First used by the provisional government in the Oregon Country in 1843 to indicate the settlers' self-rule, "Alis volat propriis" was adopted as the motto of the Oregon Territory in 1854. Oregon became the 33rd state in 1859, and the motto stuck, though it was officially replaced by "The Union" in 1957. For thirty years Oregon was "The Union," until a bill passed in 1987 changed it back, arguing that "She Flies With Her Own Wings" better reflected Oregon's tradition of independence and innovation.

To celebrate Oregon's state motto in whatever spirit you choose to view it, Pithitude has combined it with the Oregon state bird, the Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), chosen in 1927. As far as we know, this selection has not incited any arguments.
