"She flies with her own wings."

I think it's fair to say that Oregon has the coolest state motto. It also has an interesting history:

First used by the provisional government in the Oregon Country in 1843 to indicate the settlers' self-rule at a time both the United States and Great Britain had claims in the area, "Alis volat propriis" was then adopted as the motto of the Oregon Territory when it formed in 1854. The trend continued when Oregon became the 33rd state in 1859, even though the words were replaced by "The Union" on the State Seal. It wasn't until 1957 that the state legislature officially changed Oregon's motto to "The Union".

For thirty years, we were "The Union", until a bill was passed in 1987 to change it back, arguing that “She Flies With Her Own Wings” better reflected Oregon’s tradition of independence and innovation.

The state seal, unchanged since the 19th century, can be seen on the back of the Oregon State flag.  It still says, "The Union."

To celebrate our state motto in whatever spirit you choose to view it, we at Pithitude have combined it with the Oregon state bird, the Western Meadowlark (Sturnella neglecta), chosen in 1927. As far as we know, this selection has not incited any arguments.
